Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Implants
What is an Implant?
Dental implants are a safe alternative to crowns, bridgework and dentures. Implants look and feel more like natural teeth and they offer a high level of comfort, security and confidence over other treatment options.
Will my new teeth look natural?
Yes, your new teeth will look, feel and function like your natural teeth.
What are the benefits?
Because dental implants are patterned after the structure of your natural teeth, they provide a highly stable support system. You will experience decreased bone loss and gum recession associated with missing teeth. Plus, you will maintain an improved bite, and be able to eat all the foods you enjoy, contributing to better health, and of course a beautiful smile.
How do I know if I am a good candidate for dental implants?
If you are healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you are probably healthy enough to have an implant. General good health and adequate bone in the jaw are the key requirements. Anyone who is missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease or decay may be a candidate for dental implants. Age is not a major factor; successful dental implants have been performed on young people as well as the elderly.
How successful is the procedure?
Dental implants have been used successfully worldwide for many years. Good oral hygiene is an important factor in insuring long lasting results from your implants.
What are the risks?
Negative effects are rare, but may include bleeding, infection, injury to the nerves or sinus cavity, or incomplete healing of the bone around the implant resulting in implant failure are rare. During the healing process, however, discomfort, swelling and inflammation of the gums, normal responses after surgery, may be present to varying degrees.
Is the procedure painful?
Anesthesia is used during the surgical procedure to eliminate any discomfort. Your dental provider may prescribe pain medication for any discomfort after surgery. Most patients indicate that the discomfort is minimal once they arrive home. Many feel great the next day and are able to return to work.
How long will it take?
The dental implant process involves several steps and the overall treatment will vary from one person to another. In some cases implants can be placed and restored immediately while other treatment times may require several months.
How much will the treatment cost?
The cost will be determined by the number of implants that will be placed, the type of prosthesis recommended and your particular case. This can only be determined after a thorough examination by your dentist.
Will my insurance pay for implants?
Your insurance coverage will depend on your individual plan.
